Tips:

How much will it cost if you take your waste load to a Sortti Station? You can enter the details of the waste you are taking to a Sortti Station in our eSortti web service. You will be informed about the costs and you can also pay the invoice in advance, meaning that your visit to the station will be quicker.

Do you need help planning the waste management of your property? See our recommendations on the appropriate number of waste containers and the collection frequency on our website: Functional waste collection point on property. There you will find size recommendations for waste collection equipment.

How should waste management be arranged? The waste management regulations provide information on the types of waste collected separately. In addition, the regulations include information on the requirements set for collection equipment, waste collection points, and waste transport and collection. Waste containers

On the property, waste can be sorted into plastic, manually movable waste containers or various containers that are emptied by refuse truck. You can rent plastic waste containers or metal front-loading containers for larger amounts of waste (not biowaste) for your property from us. The choice of the appropriate number of waste containers and the collection frequency depend on the property’s size, resident structure and number of waste collection points. You can use the sizing table found (in finnish) on our website as an aid for planning. We deliver the waste containers to the property free of charge within seven business days, we charge separately for express delivery.

Waste container dimensions and instructions for planning the property’s waste collection point and choosing the containers: Functional waste collection point on property

All our containers are rentals – why and what are the benefits?

Using uniform waste containers improves the occupational safety of refuse truck drivers and makes collection smoother. If the property has a self-purchased, plastic waste container that complies with HSY’s standards and is suitable for mechanical collection, you can continue to use it. When the container breaks, you have to rent a new plastic waste container from HSY.

We replace rental containers that have been worn out or broken in use free of charge. We charge a fee for the replacement of burned or otherwise damaged or lost waste containers.

The rental fee also includes rinsing of the waste container 1–2 times a year depending on the type of waste. If the waste container becomes very dirty before its annual washing, you can order a replacement for a clean container subject to a charge from our customer service. For biowaste containers, it is possible to order a lining bag separately to keep the container cleaner. The refuse truck driver replaces the bags in connection with collection.

Larger, built-in deep containers and containers installed on the ground surface are sold and rented by private companies. However, collection is carried out by HSY.

Mixed waste

Every residential property must have a waste container for mixed waste. See the collection container options on the page ‘Waste containers’.

The prices do not include the waste container rental fees. All new, plastic waste containers are rental containers from HSY. Switch from waste containers owned by the property to rental containers from HSY when the containers need to be replaced. Read more in the Waste containers section of the price list.

Property cannot be reached by refuse truck? See the page ‘Annual waste management membership/regional mixed waste collection points’ of the price list.

Biowaste

According to the new waste management regulations that entered into force on 1 November 2022, all residential properties (with the exception of holiday homes) must sort biowaste separately from mixed waste as follows:

  • Espoo, Kauniainen and Kirkkonummi as of 1 July 2023
  • Vantaa as of 1 January 2024
  • Helsinki as of 1 July 2024

You can order a biowaste container and collection for the property from us, or alternatively, you can compost the biowaste on the property in a composter intended for this purpose. It is also possible to share a biowaste container or composter with your neighbours. Read more about the joint use of waste containers on our website.

Composting of food waste on the property must be reported to HSY’s compost register. More information and a form for submitting a composting notification: Composting on properties

The rental fee of biowaste containers is included in the collection fee.

Excess waste outside of multi-compartment for packages

Excess waste is waste that is placed outside the waste container. We invoice it as mixed waste.

Excess waste

Excess waste is waste that is placed outside the container. Waste packed in a plastic sack is treated as mixed waste. Excess waste should be placed immediately next to the waste container. All material immediately next to the waste container is treated as excess waste.

The maximum amount of excess waste is 1 m3 or 15 kg/sack. For larger amounts, order a collection separately from our customer service. The minimum invoicing amount is 0.1 m3 (100 litres).

You can also order a pick-up service for large items. Read more in the ‘Sortti pick-up’ section of the price list or at our website: Sortti pick-up service for large objects.

Christmas trees left in the property’s waste collection point or next to the waste containers are collected free of charge.

Fixed-term collection and interruptions

You may arrange to have the waste container or containers of your summer home, for example, emptied only during a specific period of time. During the summer holiday season (weeks 18 to 40), the waste containers of holiday homes that are only used in summer time must be emptied at the interval referred to in the waste management regulations.

If a property is unused for at least one week, waste collection can be interrupted for a specified period of time. Please submit a notification to HSY no later than one week before the planned start of the interruption. If the interruption is longer than a year or there are more than two consecutive interruptions, an application for an exception to waste management regulations must be submitted.

If you live on a property with 1–4 apartments where biowaste is composted only during part of the year, you must order a HSY biowaste container and collection for the period when biowaste is not composted. In addition to mixed waste, biowaste must be sorted separately on all properties with 1–4 apartments (with the exception of holiday homes) as follows:

  • Espoo, Kauniainen and Kirkkonummi as of 1 July 2023;
  • Vantaa as of 1 January 2024;
  • Helsinki as of 1 July 2024.

Sortti pick-up service

Order the Sortti pick-up service to pick up items that are not covered by the regular waste management service of the property due to their quality or large size. We will pick up, for example, household appliances, furniture and garden furniture, but also empty gas cylinders and gas-powered equipment. Please note that we do not pick up hazardous waste. The service is intended for private individuals and housing cooperatives, mainly for picking up 1–3 items.

Debit and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted as means of payment. One pick-up covers a maximum of nine items. The size, weight and number of the parts to be carried determine the final price and how many items are included in one pick-up.

If you have ordered a waste management service for your detached house, we can add the price of the pick-up to your waste management invoice. A pick-up ordered by the property manager can be added to the waste management invoice of the housing cooperative.

Sortti Stations

‍The Sortti Stations in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Kirkkonummi are waste recycling stations. When you bring your old furniture, garden waste and scrap metal to our Sortti Stations, they will be processed and recycled into materials or energy. Our goal is to have an even larger amount of waste materials recycled into raw materials for new products. Materials with no existing recycling solutions can be used to generate heat and electricity.

Thank you for sorting your waste, let’s recycle together!

For information on waste subject to a charge or free of charge, see the table below. Use the eSortti.fi service to declare and pay for your materials in advance. You can also use the service solely to calculate the price of your waste load.

Sortti Stations accept payment with the most common payment cards or by invoice, either as self-service or at the service desk. We do not accept cash.

  1. When arriving at the Sortti Station, sign up at the service desk.
  2. Let the employees know the type and quantity of waste you are bringing in.
  3. Unload the waste from the vehicle and place it on the waste skips. Follow our sorting instructions. If necessary, ask the employees for advice. Please note that we cannot offer assistance in unloading the waste.

For more information, please visit our webpage Sortti Stations.

Please note that Sortti Stations cannot be accessed with lorries or combination vehicles that are more than two metres wide or more than 10 metres long. Such loads should be transported to the Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre.

Renting a trailer for waste transport

Private customers can rent a trailer from a Sortti Station for transporting waste to the station. You can rent the trailer for three hours. The trailer cannot be used for transporting the topsoil sold at the Sortti Stations. The rental fee is €5 if you use the trailer to bring your waste to the Sortti Station. Waste reception is subject to a fee according to our price list.

If the rental time exceeds three hours or the trailer is not used for bringing waste to the Sortti Station, a €40 daily fee is charged from the beginning of the rental time. More information and reservations:

Waste delivered in lorries to the Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre

he HSY eco-industrial centre located in Ämmässuo, Espoo is a modern touchpoint of waste management and circular economy.

Spanning about 200 hectares, the Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre offers services such as treatment of biowaste into biogas and compost, treatment and utilisation of ash and slag from waste-to-energy plant, collection and utilisation of landfill gas, treatment of contaminated soil and sorting of various waste loads and delivering the materials for reuse.

Weighed waste loads

Waste loads transported by lorries or other large vehicle are accepted at the Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre in Espoo.

The customer (the producer and the holder of the waste) must be aware of the quality, characteristics and origin of the waste in their possession as well as its suitability for landfill use. This information is provided upon delivery. A Waste Transportation Document is required for certain types of waste in accordance with the current legislation. The treatment fee is determined by the weight, type and quality of the waste load. The load is assessed at the reception. If a load includes several different types of waste, the fee is determined based on the most expensive type of waste.

We will charge the customer for any additional costs incurred from waste being directed to incorrect treatment as a result of missing or inadequately filled documentation, such as a missing Waste Transportation Document or incorrect waste type declaration.

Waste delivered in lorries

Fees per waste type

Items marked with an asterisk (*) are hazardous waste.

Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste (also known as toxic waste) refers to an unused substance or item that may cause a health hazard or an environmental hazard.

It is extremely important to not place hazardous waste in mixed waste or in the sewer; all hazardous waste must be delivered to the appropriate collection point.

Hazardous waste delivered by households is accepted free of charge, with the following exceptions: Construction and demolition waste containing hazardous waste are subject to a charge for households as well and we charge for them

as indicated below. Asbestos and pressure-treated wood are also subject to a charge, see the ‘Sortti Stations’ section of the price list.

Read more about domestic hazardous waste collection points.

Commercial hazardous waste

We charge a fee for commercial hazardous waste based on total weight. The total weight includes the IBC container, barrel or pallet used to store the waste. We also charge a separate treatment fee for IBCs. Kivikko Station for hazardous waste, Kivikonlaita 5, Helsinki

  • Opening hours Mon–Fri from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • A maximum of 800 kg of each type of hazardous waste, except waste oil a maximum of 50 kg. Excluding gas cylinders, see the fees below.
